Sherwood forest hospitals trust goes live with bluespier theatres

Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has deployed Bluespier’s Theatre Management System (TMS) to electronically manage the clinical and administrative functions of its theatres, from theatre scheduling, patient tracking and operation notes and coding.

The Trust provides a comprehensive range of hospital and community services, including planned and emergency surgery, children’s services, obstetric and gynaecological care.

Due to merge with Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), the Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust currently runs three hospitals in Nottinghamshire – King’s Mill Hospital, Newark Hospital and Mansfield Community Hospital providing healthcare for about 420,000 people a year. Already being used by NUH Bluespier was the logical solution of choice for Sherwood Forest Hospitals due to its ease of use, cost-effectiveness and clinical functionality.

In early 2016, Sherwood Forest Hospitals commissioned Nottinghamshire Health Informatics Service (NHIS) to manage the roll-out of Bluespier into King’s Mill Hospital and Newark Hospital.

Speaking on the recent implementation, Martin Tooth, Project & Business Change Manager of NHIS said:

“What was particularly relevant to this implementation was the timescale. As the Sherwood Forest Hospitals incumbent system was being decommissioned on July 7th, the project had a 12-week window for deployment and training to over 300 end users. Given that a typical deployment usually takes s ix to nine months, this was a big challenge!
“I think the timescale was actually a benefit to the project. It really focused attention for all involved. The team at Bluespier was absolutely fantastic in terms of helping meet the very challenging deadline. It was very much all hands on deck to help reach the deployment project’s ambitious goal.”

The Bluespier TMS software modules are currently used in more than 50 NHS and private hospitals in the UK and Ireland and are designed to enable hospitals to manage theatre, trauma, anaesthetics, pre-theatre and stock activities more efficiently, effectively to ensure the best possible patient care.

“Although work had to be planned and carried out very quickly to meet the deadline, there has been no major issues reported since going live on July 4th. This is testament to the level of detail covered during the project management phase by all stakeholders – Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust, NUH, NHIS and the Bluespier team. It was very much a collaborative approach throughout the project lifecycle and the final result is one that will ultimately help deliver high quality care to Sherwood Forest Hospital’s patients.” said Mr Tooth.

Gavin Webb, Managing Director at Bluespier said:

“We are delighted with the success of the Sherwood Forest implementation. We understand the pressures that hospitals are under, and are very proud that our solutions can help improve efficiency and ultimately patient care within high pressure environments. We will always try to accommodate the unique needs of each customer and Sherwood was no different.”
