BSUH goes live with fully integrated EPR and theatre system

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUH) has gone live with a new integrated hospital management system that includes a patient administration system (PAS), an integrated theatre management system and business intelligence.

The success at the Trust is the culmination of a 9-month project, which was officially announced in March 2018, and a complex two-way integration between System C’s Medway EPR and specialist clinical theatre system, Bluespier Theatres.

BSUH already used Bluespier Whiteboard to manage Trauma and Orthopaedics and Paediatric patients across the Trust. They were keen to expand on this specialist clinical functionality whilst benefitting from an end-to-end patient management system that enabled better information sharing and data capture across three hospital sites.

The move to the integrated offering from System C and Bluespier will see the Trust manage one single, electronic patient record across all departments, promoting data quality, accessibility and better patient care. Theatre system functionality, including scheduling, tracking and assessments will all be accessible via Medway to give a seamless and efficient working process for clinical and administration staff.

In the first week, the new patient management system was used by over 2,200 users on nearly 2,000 workstations across the Trust.

Ian Arbuthnot, director of IM&T at BSUH, said: “Our patients depend on clinical teams having access to the right tools and technologies to deliver outstanding care.

“This go-live is a major step forward for our IT strategy, supporting not just our Trust but also a large number of community health providers to create a seamless, high quality, service for our patients.”

Stuart van Rooyen, Managing Director of Bluespier, said: “The installation is an excellent example of how effective technology working together can enable Trusts and hospitals to better capture, access and share crucial patient information at the time of care.

“We are proud to have been involved in another success story as part of BSUH’s ongoing Powering Patient First IT strategy.”
